Built to honour the Virgin Mary, whom Venetians believed rescued them from the wide-spread plague which resulted from a war with austria in 1630, this church is situated at the entrance to the Grand Canal. Modeled after the Church of the Twelve Apostles, St. Marks Basilica is a representation of the Roman, Byzantine and Venetian history and culture that is incorporated in its style.
