Built to honour the Virgin Mary, whom Venetians believed rescued them from the wide-spread plague which resulted from a war with austria in 1630, this church is situated at the entrance to the Grand Canal. Every year, Venetians march from St. Mark's Square to the church as part of the Feast of our Lady of Good Health celebrations.

Modeled after the Church of the Twelve Apostles, St. Marks Basilica is a representation of the Roman, Byzantine and Venetian history and culture that is incorporated in its style. Situated within the church, St. Mark's Museum pays homage to its namesake through various exhibits, including manuscripts, tapestries and illustrated storyboards depicting the saints life and work.
